Do Nano Influencers Have Higher Engagement Rates Than Big Creators? We Measured It
Instagram engagement rate benchmarks by creator size, from 549,949 French Reels: nano creators run a median 1.9% per follower vs 0.34% for 1M+ accounts – yet per view every size lands near 2.5%. The gap is the denominator.

Many marketers believe that small creators decisively win on one metric. Sort creators by follower count and the classic engagement rate goes down significantly: the median organic Reel from a nano account (under 10K followers) engages 1.9% of its followers; from a 1M+ account, 0.34%. A staggering 5.5× gap!
We scored 549,949 organic Instagram Reels from 35,773 French creators (Q2 2026) both ways, and that gap says less about creators than about arithmetic. Engagement ÷ followers counts an audience that includes everyone who ever tapped follow, whether or not the feed still shows them anything. The people who can like, comment or share a Reel are the people who saw it.
Divide the same interactions by views instead and the verdict flips.
Two metrics, one market

Per view, the typical French Reel engages 2.5% of the audience it reaches, and creator size barely moves that number: the median runs 2.8% for nano creators and 2.3% for mega creators. So yes, engagement rate is lower for larger creators – but instead of a 5.5× gap, there is only a small margin of 0.5 percentage points.
Where the 5.5× gap comes from
The real difference between small and big creators is views, not reactions. A small account's Reel is seen by a large share of followers, and often by people beyond them. A big account drags millions of followers the feed stopped serving long ago, so its typical Reel collects far fewer views than it has followers. Divide engagement by that huge follower number and the rate looks tiny – even though the people who actually watched engaged just as much.
Views per follower fall as the account grows

A nano creator's typical Reel collects views worth 61% of its follower count; a mega creator's, 16%.
How to read a creator instead
Yes, the views-to-followers ratio falls as accounts grow – which is exactly why follower count alone was never the right way to size up a creator. It measures a stored audience; the feed decides who actually sees a post, follower or not.
The two numbers that matter are the views a creator actually generates per post and the engagement those views earn. In France the second is close to a constant, about 2.5% per view at every size, so comparing a 30K account against a 2M account comes down to real reach and what you pay for it.
Keep tracking engagement ÷ followers and you systematically overrate small accounts and underrate large ones for the same per-view engagement. We have been calling the broader shift the death of the follower; this is what it looks like in one quarter of one market's organic Reels.
Questions people ask
Do nano influencers have higher engagement rates than big creators?
Per follower, yes: in our data the median organic Reel from an under-10K creator engages 1.9% of followers, against 0.34% for 1M+ accounts, creating a 5.5× gap. Per view, the gap nearly disappears: 2.8% against 2.3%.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Counted against views, the typical organic Reel engages 2.5% of the people who actually watch it, and that holds from nano to mega – the top quarter of Reels runs above roughly 4% per view at every size. Counted against followers, "good" depends almost entirely on account size: the median runs 1.9% under 10K followers and 0.34% above 1M, which is why per-follower benchmarks mislead.
What is the average engagement rate for mega influencers (1M+ followers)?
In France in Q2 2026, the median organic Reel from a 1M+ creator engaged 0.34% of followers – and 2.3% of its actual viewers. The typical 1M+ Reel collects views worth 16% of the account's follower count, and that view ratio is what drags the classic per-follower rate down.
Should engagement rate be divided by followers or by views?
Views. A follower count includes people who stopped seeing the account years ago and misses the non-followers the feed brings in; views count exactly the people who could engage.
Can a Reel get more views than the creator has followers?
Yes, routinely. Views come from the algorithmic feed, explore and shares as well as from followers.
